Trials to allow pharmacies to provide over the counter contraceptive pills

More than $100 million will be spent on two national trials allowing pharmacies to provide contraceptive pills over the counter, set to begin early 2026. If successful, concession card holders will be able to consult a trained pharmacist at no cost and access the pill without a prescription.

This change will be beneficial, as it will make it easier for women to make informed decisions about pregnancy. The amount of pregnancies that are unplanned currently sits at around 50%, so this change should be able to bring the percentage down.

Fiona Bartholomaeus talks to Professor of International Health Jaya Dantas about these trials on On The Record.
