Damon Smith on upcoming shows and new documentary
Award-winning musician and storyteller Damon Smith returns from Melbourne to his home-town Perth to play at Nannup Music Festival and perform a new show on Thursday 6 March at the Ellington Jazz Club.
Smith is an accomplished composer, lyricist, music producer, creative writer, performer, and pianist, who describes his musical style as sitting somewhere between jazz and blues. On stage he blends cabaret, comedy, and general ‘buffoonery’ to tackle topics such as the reality of mental illness with humour and style.
Smith’s 2021 film, Mental As Everything, is a documentary based on Smith’s live cabaret show, through which he shares his deeply personal experience of living with OCD and bipolar disorder. Smith is passionate about creating better language to foster discussion on living with mental illness. Mental As Everything is currently available to watch on SBS.
In a beautiful and raw discussion on Artbeat, Bec Bowman chats with Damon Smith about his upcoming show at the Ellington, his documentary Mental as Everything, and his own lived experience of mental illness within the creative world.
