ICONYX introduces herself with Blak On Trak

Boorloo-based Kukatja and Pintupi artist ICONYX has released her debut album Blak On Trak, at 17 years old.

The album showcases her powerful voice, cultural heritage, and unique perspective as an artist telling stories and navigating the world without sight.

Blak On Trak is an expansive work that blends hip-hop, R&B, world and contemporary music, drawing from ICONYX’s East Kimberley roots, and her experiences growing up. As a passionate songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and co-producer, she combines traditional storytelling with modern music, celebrating the complexity of her First Nations identity while also pushing boundaries with a forward-thinking musical approach. Low slung hip-hop – with traditional instrumentation as its backbone – sits alongside protest chants and contemporary pop takes on First Nation’s storytelling traditions.

ICONYX joined Pam on Brekky to discuss songwriting and identity, her lifelong affinity with music, and the importance of community support. She shares the stories behind how late Archie Roach and Gurrumul songs — “Mulywongk” and “Baru”— came to be featured on the record.

ICONYX will be performing at Illuminate Yagan Square on 16 April.
