One-man play Blue by Thomas Weatherall makes WA debut

Kamilaroi playwright and actor Thomas Weatherall, known for his role as Malakai Mitchell on TV series Heartbreak High, won the 2024 Matilda Award for Best New Australian Work for his one-man play, Blue. It is a piece that dives deep into grief, mental health, and resilience, and its WA premiere will be running 23 May – 8 June at the State Theatre Centre of WA’s Studio Underground.

Blue will be performed by proud Whadjuk Noongar actor Owen Hasluck, and directed by acclaimed Noongar theatre-maker Ian Wilkes.

Thomas Weatherall chatted with Bec Bowman on Artbeat about the play, how it evolved from its highly personal origin, and the experience of passing the torch on playing the central role.
