Disability Representation in Children’s Books

The representation of individuals living with disabilities is something that can always be improved, but according to a new study from ECU, one area that is particularly lacking in adequate representation is children’s picture books.

The study assessed 90 award listed Australian children’s books finding that the depiction of disabled characters was virtually non-existent. Not only does this failing impact marginalized individuals from seeing depictions of experiences that reflect their own lives, but it also further perpetuates existing stereotypes of disabilities.

Associate Professor, Helen Adam from ECU’s School of Education, joined On the Record’s Fiona Bartholomaeus to further discuss the study.
