Get to know Val

I love making playlists and to be able to sit in the studio and share my favourite songs with the listener is quite intimate and special so I’m very grateful for the opportunity. Outside of the station I play the piano, compose and write music. I first heard about RTRFM through the presenters of Saturday Jazz!

How did you become involved in the station?

I got involved with RTRFM through Gemma Farrell and Dan Garner. I am a WAAPA student and as part of an elective I chose to do work placement at RTRFM in which Gemma and Dan allowed for me to sit in their sessions of Saturday Jazz. From there, Dan reached out to me after a couple of months and I signed up to do the course and here I am!

Tell us about your most memorable gig, either attending or playing at?

My most memorable gig, would probably have to be when I saw the great Marcus Gilmore at The Jazz Gallery in New York alongside David Virelles on piano, Emmanuel Michael on guitar and the impeccable Joel Ross on vibraphone. That was a beautiful set of music.
