WA introduces Equal Opportunity Bill

Western Australia’s anti-discrimination laws are getting their biggest overhaul in more than 40 years.

The Equal Opportunity Bill 2026 proposes new protections against discrimination, harassment and vilification, including for LGBTQIA+ people, people with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness or family violence. But questions remain about where the protections begin and end, and whether the legislation goes too far or not far enough.

Isla Tomlinson spoke with Attorney General Tony Buti for On The Record about what the new laws will mean for Western Australians and what happens next as the bill makes it’s way through parliament.
