Get to know Matthew Tomich
I fell into RTRFM by accident in my mid-20s, oblivious to the fact that I’d find a sense of community and belonging I’d been seeking for years. A few months later I started presenting Behind the Mirror – I think my first song played on radio was Human Hair by the Night Terrors – and now host Posted with the occasional fill across the grid.
The station casts a long shadow; before I knew it, I realised I could trace all of my cultural interests, favourite bands and niche curiosities to the 92.1 frequency, like some hyper-local version of Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. I’ve met enough friends, confidants and collaborators through RTRFM that an Annual General Meeting feels like a family reunion.
Broadcasting is a privilege and a pleasure. Curating a radio program is an artform in and of itself – I admire RTRFM presenters like Sarah Tout, Rhian Todhunter and Oliver Laing who are some of the best at this – and it’s a really special feeling to know you’re playing something on Australian airwaves for the first time. I’ve discovered some of my favourite music thanks to people at this station; what better motivator keep broadcasting than being the prospect of being a conduit to someone else’s musical discovery?
