What to expect
After a stellar opening season that saw more than 1,500 local music lovers take in live bands, sunshine and panoramic views at the WA Maritime Museum, Harbour Sundays is back for another five weeks of free, live music in January and February 2017.
Taking place on the balcony of the WA Maritime Museum at Victoria Quay, the second series will see five weeks of Perth’s premier musicians, running the gamete from folk, funk blues and reggae to bluegrass, Congolese dance, soul-funk and dub.
The 2017 season kicks off on Sunday January 29 with blues-y bang courtesy of Western Australia’s hardest working blues band, The Floors, alongside slow-burning Freo groove-purveyors The Durongs and DJ Sarah Tout from Simone & Girlfunkle and RTRFM’s Drastic on Plastic.
On Sunday February 5, Australia’s longest-running bluegrass band Bluegrass Parkway take centre-stage as they celebrate three decades of performing world-class traditional country and bluegrass music. Fremantle folk-country outfit Stoney Joe offer the perfect complementary comedown, alongside DJ Justin Walshe (Justin Walshe Folk Machine).
Sunday February 12 sees an eclectic mélange of innovative instrumentation and high-energy grooves courtesy of Shangara Jive. They’ll be joined by psychedelic dub-octet The Weapon is Sound and their intoxicating, transformative, kaleidoscopic live show, alongside DJs General Justice and Mumma Trees from RTRFM’s Jamdown Vershun.
After an international jaunt complete with shows in the US and UK, The Little Lord Street Band play Harbour Sundays on Sunday February 19, armed with a WAM nomination and a new EP recorded in Nashville. Walk With Me shows a marked maturation in songwriting, merging beautifully wistful lyricism with soulful melodies, complete with a guest appearance from Ruby Boots. Riley Pearce graces balcony stage following a similar musical sojourn that saw him spend six months in Montana, resulting in Outside the Lines, a soothing blend of uplifting, seasoned songwriting, joined by DJ Xanthea.
Harbour Sundays closes its 2017 season on Sunday February 26 with a masterclass in rhythm courtesy of two of Perth’s most energetic live bands. After a stellar 2016 that saw them earn a WAM Award nomination for Best World Act and close out one of the final performances at the Western Australian Museum’s Hackett Hall at A Moment in Time, Soukouss Internationale bring their world-class live show to the Maritime Museum balcony. They’ll be joined by eclectic funk five-piece The Amani Consort, armed with a new suite of songs, alongside Perth’s premier funk/soul/disco DJ Mama Cass.
Harbour Sundays is the perfect way to spend a summer by the Indian Ocean, with stunning ocean views at an iconic Fremantle landmark and some of the city’s finest local musicians.
