Understorey: Appealing Yeerlirrie

While many countries are stepping into the green economy,  in January 2017, the Liberal Barnett Government approved Cameco’s Yeelirrie uranium mine, just 16 days before going into caretaker mode. Environment Minister Albert Jacob’s reversal to allow the Yeelirrie mine to proceed went against advice from the Minister’s own Environmental Protection Authority and against the wishes of Aboriginal traditional owners. A fortnight ago Chief Justice Martin from the Supreme Court of Western Australia began hearing an appeal against this environmental approval, but must be confined to examining for errors of law, not environmental impact.  This landmark hearing was brought by the Conservation Council of Western Australia, represented by Piers Verstegen, and the Tjiwarl Native Title Holder women: Vicky Abdullah, Shirley Wanyabong and Elizabeth Wanyabong.
