Understorey: Lock Up Fracking
The McGowan Labor Government announced fracking is now permitted over at least five million hectares in WA . Last week on Understorey the Minister for Mines, Bill Johnston, dismissed community concerns about environment and public health, and social impacts, arguing that the Hatton Inquiry found a way to manage the low risks involved, and that there would be benefit for regions, particularly for some Aboriginal settlements wanting to Close The Gap. Today Understorey brings you the response from Simone Van Hattem, a Toodyay resident active in Lock the Gate Alliance, who says a closer look shows that the greenhouse gases emissions have been underestimated, that farmers and Aboriginal communities will not have veto rights on exploration phase fracking, and that there are better ways to renew development in the north.
