Understorey: Making Waves with Peace Boat

A hopeful Japanese Peace Boat arrives in Fremantle Port today (a day before the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists reset their "doomsday clock").  Meri Joyce from Peace Boat speaks to Understorey about how their cruising global voyages link people affected by nuclear weapons and nuclear power disaster;  Yvette Zegenhagen from the International Red Cross recounts how nuclear weapons offend international law, because an attack on cities doesn't discriminate between civilians and the military; and Nobel Laureate ICAN's Professor Tilman Ruff spells out how even a limited nuclear war, faraway from Australia and our allies, could threaten all of us. At forums around the country, and starting in Perth, survivors of Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima will be asking Australia and Japan to sign the treaty to ban nuclear weapons. (Photos: A.
