Understorey: Messages of Peace Boat

A week from now Peace Boat’s 96th voyage will arrive in Fremantle carrying up to a thousand passengers, mainly from Japan, including most notably several survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (known as hibakusha), along with farmers from Fukushima. They will meet Aboriginal representatives of those many affected by nuclear testing in Australia and threatened by uranium mines here in Western Australia. Their arrival has inspired two free public events while they are in port for 26 hours next week -  the big Wanjoo Welcome event at Fremantle's B Shed on Wednesday afternoon, and a panel forum at Notre Dame on Thursday (the 24th and 25th January). The Peace Boat voyage joins with Nobel Peace Laureate ICAN (International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons) in inviting Australia to sign the landmark 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
