Get to know Kathi

As a kid, I frequently “borrowed” (never returned them…) CDs and vinyl from my dad’s collection and discovered all kinds of genres that way. This mischief as well as playing a few instruments growing up probably led to my very broad taste in music! Presenting is a very interesting way of engaging with music. It feels like when you show a friend your new favourite songs, but when you present, you get to share the music, the excitement, and the joy with even more people! Listening to what the other presenters play and share is so fun as well, because you get to discover a plethora of old and new music! Outside of the station, I work on my Linguistics PhD, surf (not very well), bake (pretty well), and enjoy all things creative and outdoorsy.

How did you become involved in the station?

I moved to Boorloo from overseas in 2024, and went to In The Pines with a few friends shortly after I had moved. That definitely put RTRFM on my radar, and I decided to get involved with the station then and there. As I settled into my new home, I also wanted to find a new hobby or interest as well as a community of likeminded, wonderful people, so I finally signed up to do the presenter training! It’s been so much fun and such a pleasure, and I look forward to discovering heaps of new music as well as making new friends!

Tell us about your most memorable gig, either attending or playing at?

When I was 14, I asked my dad to go to a Linkin Park concert with me. They played a huge show at a massive outdoor event location in Munich for the A Thousand Suns World Tour. Teenage me felt so angsty and happy at the same time, it was magical! During that tour, every concert was recorded and you could purchase a CD with the live recording of the show you attended. I still listen to that CD on every road trip! As I got older and shifted from primarily listening to alternative rock, heavy metal, and grunge to electronic music, specifically techno, I found myself in new spaces. I got to see Cashu // Mamba Negra, Nene H, and Dj Gigola play at local clubs in Munich, which heavily impacted my taste and my own style of selecting music as well as djing.

What is your favourite show (other than your own) on RTRFM?

There are too many I love. Full Frequency, Drastic on Plastic, Burn the Airwaves, Drivetime, Moorditj Mag, and Homegrown, to name a few…
