Andy Burns: Post-Grief Digital Safari
RTRFM’s Local Feature album this week comes from Andy Burns, Boorloo-born and raised, Naarm-based, but a frequent returnee to Western shores — a prodigal son of sorts.
For the past decade he’s been variously based across Australia and Japan, crafting intricate chamber pop bangers that ooze with classic 80s pop writing in the style of Blue Nile or China Crisis, creating a gorgeous combination of sophisticated-pop, elegant synth work & 80s pastiche vocals.
In Post-Grief Digital Safari, we have anthems for dumpster diving and devotional numbers for Colbie The Cat; who appears in framed photo form at live shows; that feature Andy’s iconic karaoke set-up, over-enthusiastic head banging and erratic impassioned movements, stylised and jerky like an alternative pop star of yonder years.
His fourth full length record, Post-Grief Digital Safari came out last week, taking us on a syrupy journey through grief and cheekiness in equal measure.
Andy Burns caught up with RTRFM’s Music Director; Annika Moses, to chat all things Post-Grief Digital Safari.
