ARTBEAT: Stories from RTRFM’s Past with Bec Bowman and Danae Gibson

Bec Bowman and Danae Gibson join forces for a special episode of Artbeat, celebrating 45 years of community radio in Perth.

Before the countdown of RTRFM’s Top 45 songs of all time begins, Bec and Danae interview old friends of RTR and share memories of the station’s past with Kath Letch, Lee Kinsella and Robert Fletcher.

Without Kath Lech, we might not be celebrating 45 years today. As RTRFM’s first station manager, longtime general manager of Triple R in Melbourne and current digital radio producer for the CBAA, Kath is no stranger to community radio. She discussed the history of 92.1 and her love of community radio.

Lee Kinsella curator of the Cruthers Collection of Women’s Art – Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, shares stories of her youth playing in a local rock band, the Fly By Night Club, and memories of first discovering the station we know and love.

Robert Fletcher was a part of the Each To His/Her Own Show, a wireless show which aired on 6UVS-FM and RTR-FM in Perth from 1984-1994. He share stories of the shows early days and their significance for LGBTQIA+ youth during a time when homosexuality was criminalised.
