Book Club with Danielle Raffaele

We’ve had a little bit of time away from the bookshelf, but it’s given Danielle Raffaele plenty of time to do some reading…

RTRFM’s resident bibliofile is back with books on Breakfast with Pam in a new format, bringing you reviews and author chats each week.

She begins by catching us up on the latest book headlines, including Alexis Wright’s Stella Prize winning novel Praiseworthy and the ABIA awards, before getting stuck into a review of the recently translated Japanese work of fiction Butter by Asako Yuzuki.

Originally published in 2017 by author Asako Yuzuki and recently translated into English by Polly Barton, Butter is a thriller about a young journalist who fawns for a foodie turned serial killer who she is profiling for work.

Based on the real-life case of the “Konkatsu Killer”, in which a con woman and talented home cook called Kanae Kijima was convicted of poisoning three of her male lovers, Butter uses its sordid source material to interrogate the impossible beauty standards to which Japanese women are held.
