Discovery of Kimberley reef-building coral lifeline against climate change

New research off the coast of WA is unlocking mysteries in coral, specifically coral lurking deep underwater in the Kimberley region which could help battle the impacts of climate change on WA’s marine habitats.

The study focuses largely on deepwater mesophytic coral and has found some pretty interesting results as to how they’re able to survive despite the lack of sunlight.

Former Curtin University honours student Amy Carmignani was the lead author of the study and is now a PhD student at the Australian Institute of Marine Science. She joined Fiona Bartholomaeus for On The Record to discuss her findings.
