In the wake of recent hurricanes in Florida, USA, fake images and videos of the disasters has been circulated as real by certain news media, a result of technological development in the internet era and the desire for viewer engagement for the sake of advertising revenue.

Jeff Bullen is On The Record with Dr T J Thomson, an expert on visual communication and digital media lecturing at RMIT University, to discuss the prevalence of this sort of misinformation, how and why it’s spread by various news sources, the role that generative AI plays in creating false imagery, and how viewers can spot a fake or navigate around misinformation when staying informed about current events.
