Evolution of Oxygen in Earth’s Atmosphere

Over the span of more than two billion years, earth underwent seismic changes which transformed our atmosphere from an oxygen-poor one to an oxygen-rich one.

These are the findings of a recent international study which used previously published data and oxygen isotope records preserved in ancient sulphate minerals. This news research provides an environmental framework for understanding how life and evolution on earth as we know it came to be.

Dr Matthew Dodd from UWA’s School of Earth Sciences, joined On the Record’s Fiona Bartholomaeus to further discuss the published data and to discuss the environmental framework.
