Female Superhero Films Portray “Outdated” Feminist Perspectives

Over the past few years, we’ve slowly started to see more Female-led Superhero films which has created a much needed space for Gender Diversity within the genre.

However, new research emerging from ECU (Edith Cowan University) shows that they and the themes in which they are presented can potentially be portrayed in an outdated way.

On The Record presenter Fiona Bartholomaeus took the opportunity to catch up and chat with Dr Jess Taylor, who is an Adjunct Academic at the ECU School Of Arts and Humanities.

Together they discuss issues encompassing the research that involve what it means by “feminist perspectives” and “strands of feminist thinking” within movies and mainstream media, including with how female superhero films label sexism and harassment as patterns of behaviour, and how portrayals of past perspectives impact films in what they are trying to achieve and display to the general public.
