FITTER | HAPPIER: Forensic Breakthrough To Solve Historic Crimes

In Western Australia, PathWest operate the sole forensic biology laboratory – performing forensic DNA analysis and informing on more than 11,000 crime investigations each year.

A major forensic breakthrough will be used to try to solve historical crimes right here in Perth. Scientists affiliated with PathWest’s Research and Development team have discovered a way to extract DNA from decades-old microscope slides.

On The Record presenter Madeleine Lombardi is joined in the studio with Colby Hymus, who is a is Research and Development Scientist from PathWest.

Together they discuss how the new scientific process works, how old are the microscope slides used during the investigation process, including why it was not possible to extract DNA from these decades-old microscope slides before the breakthrough development.
