FITTER | HAPPIER: Water Drownings Spike Nationwide

The past twelve months have seen a significant spike in drowning deaths nationally.

Western Australia recorded a 22 per cent increase, with males accounting for 90 per cent of all drownings. With the weather heating up – it’s important to remember how dangerous and unforgiving the water can be.

Over two-hundred and forty eight people died as a result of drowning across Australia between 1 July 2019 and 30 June 2020, highlighting an 8% decrease on the statistics from 2018-19. However, 33 people drowned in Western Australia, indicating a 14% increase on the previous year.

On The Record presenter Graeme Watson is joined in the studio with Rachel Murray, Health Promotions Officer at the Royal Life Saving Society W.A.

Together they sit down to discuss all about the hidden hazards, including how to remain cautious around water during the summer months, how the significant over representation of male drowning incidents occurred in the statistics, and how alcohol consumption increases the probability of potential drownings.
