How Do We Put An Economic Value on Antarctica?

For the first time, new research has been able to attach an economic value to Antarctica and its surrounding Southern Oceans, which it has labeled at a whopping $276 Billion.

For an ecosystem like Antarctica that is so heavily threatened by the effects of climate change, it’s important to emphasise its value and the benefits it provides to the rest of the world in order to give a firm reason to bolster its protection.

But which Antarctic features have contributed to this staggering number and what changes to its protection will now need to be made? On the Record’s Fiona Bartholomaeus spoke with Dr. Rachel Baird, Senior Lecturer of Law at the University of Tasmania and co-author of this new research.
