How the Writers and Actors strike is impacting Australia

Hollywood is currently on pause as the double Writers and Actors strike nears its 100th day. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) began protesting working conditions in May and The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) joined in July. Both organisations are demanding an increase in base pay, residuals from streaming services, and an assurance that their work will not be replaced by Artificial Intelligence.

The strike has already halted several major film and TV productions in the U.S., and, due to the globalised practices that characterise today’s media industries, some Australian productions as well. Cinema and screen studies lecturer in the department of Media and Communication at Swinburne University, Dr. Andrew Lynch, joins us to discuss the strike.
