Jintulu: People of the Sun with Michael Bonner and Natalie Scholtz

A new exhibition opened at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery on the 17th of February. Curator Michael Bonner and artist Natalie Scholtz came in to Artbeat to talk about their artistic process and inspiration and the construction of the gallery.

The word Jintulu comes from the Martu language and “posits Aboriginal Australians as ‘People of the Sun'”. The gallery explores the theme of the sun and the shadow of Australia’s colonialism. Natalie Scholtz in her work explores blackness through her series of paintings while other artists install immersive spaces that confront the audience with the harsh reality of racism. In Mr Bonner’s own words, Jintulu: People of the Sun asks “What’s changed”.

Jintulu features art from Natalie Scholtz, Curtis Taylor, Murungkurr Terry Murray, and Allison Alder. The exhibition is open now and runs to the 27th of April.
