Magdalena Bay on their Imaginal Disk
Magdalena Bay are bringing back the heady concept album. The alt-pop duo comprising Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin made a record about a character named True, whose body rejects a “disk upgrade” forced into their forehead by aliens, designed to bridge the speculative connections between humans and apes or insects or something truly, madly, deeply fascinating.
Imaginal Disk is an electronic-groove-rock opera album with romantic and quintessential pop sensibilities at the core, firing a tongue-in-cheek wink at itself and the notion of a concept album, while gleefully swimming in its own lore; to the delight of all who wade or dive into Magdalena Bay’s waters.
Mica and Matt are bringing their Imaginal Mystery Tour to Australia this March, marking their first-ever headline shows in the country and playing Metropolis Fremantle on March 11.
On Breakfast, Beth Mackiewicz chats to the duo about live shows, dream mixtapes and prog rock influences ahead of their Australian Tour.
