Matthew Rankin on film as a Universal Language

Released in Perth cinemas this week, Universal Language is a new Canadian comedy-drama that follows several initially unrelated, but gradually converging, stories. It takes place in an alternate vision of Winnipeg where the dominant language is Persian.

Directed by Matthew Rankin, Universal Language premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, and was selected as Canada’s entry into the Academy Awards.

Tristan Fidler from Movie Squad spoke with Rankin about the film on Artbeat.
