New UK PM, Liz Truss

On Monday night the 5th of September, after a closer result than had been expected, Liz Truss won the race to be leader of Britain’s Conservative Party and will therefore become Prime Minister of The United Kingdom taking over from exiting leader, Boris Johnson. Truss beat her competitor, Rishi Sunak, for the leadership with 57.4% of the online and postal votes received from Tory members. Celebrations won’t last for long as the new PM will inherit an onslaught of challenges, including the current energy crisis, rising costs of living, economic recovery from Covid-19, and a divided conservative party that’s losing the public’s trust.

Tom Reynolds was joined by University of Western Australia Professor Shamit Saggar, director of the Public Policy Institute, to discuss the incoming PM.
