Oz Echoes in Efficient Spaces

Bursting on to the scene in 2015, Melbourne-based label Efficient Space has quickly made a reputation as the go-to diggers of Australia’s weird and wonderful musical past, both reissuing forgotten gems and unearthing unheard sounds on a number of various artist compilations that focus on Australia’s DIY scene’s of the 80s and surrounding periods.

Showing no signs of slowing down, the label is back with the new compilation Oz Echoes: DIY Cassettes and Archives 1980 – 1989, showcasing the deep creativity and innovation of artists creating all manner of new wave, proto-techno, EBM and various other synth-influenced sounds.

RTRFM’s Will Backler caught up with label boss Michael Kucyk to find out about how the new compilation came together (compiled by Steele Bonus), how the label chooses what to release, future plans for the label and more. Will started by asking what the original idea for the label was…
