The magnitude 6.8 earthquake that hit Morocco’s High Atlas Mountains has now claimed more than 2000 lives and has been unusually devastating in its scale and scope.

Professor Chris Elder, from Curtin’s School of Earth and Planetary Sciences, discuses the causes of the earthquake at what is typically not a high seismic zone and explains why this has happened.
