Quantum Sensors to Help with Navigation Similar to GPS

Physicists are currently working on quantum technology that can navigate in a similar way to GPS signals, but how does it work?

Quantum sensors measure the magnetic field around the Earth so they can be looked at on magnetic maps to help work out where you are. Along with this, they can be used when GPS signal is lost so there is a reliable source of information to continue operation. With hope that these sensors will soon be commercially available, a world in which autonomy is being created safely and securely is in sight.

Fiona Bartholomaeus discusses this work with Professor Allison Kealy on On The Record.
