Social Media Giants Usher In ‘Newsletter Arms Race’

The return of Newsletters into the sphere of Journalism has re-established a business model that doesn’t depend on big tech platforms—providing readers a more calming, sustainable way to engage with the news.

However, companies such as Facebook and Twitter have encroached on making use of the web-based medium by offering newsletter tools of their own, holding the potential risk of crushing news competitors along the way in what has been proclaimed as a ‘Newsletter Arms Race’.

The two social media conglomerates are hoping to pull the flow of information back onto their own platforms, and maintain distribution dominance surrounding journalism content and online discourse via their algorithms.

On The Record presenter Fiona Bartholomaeus is joined in the studio with Dr Julian Novitz, who is an award winning writer and Lecturer of Media Communications at Swinburne University of Technology.

Together they discuss the re-emergence of newsletters will impact the way we read and obtain information, including the potential issues associated with social media organisations competing against each other for newsletter tools.
