Staffing Shortage in Mental Health Nurse Workforce

Almost half of all Australians aged 16-85 have experienced a mental disorder in their life, however there is a dramatic shortage of mental health nurses to help them.

It’s estimated Australia’s mental health nurse workforce will be 60 per cent short of requirements by 2030.

To help address this, Edith Cowan University is offering several postgraduate mental health courses to best equip nurses and midwives with the skills and experience needed to negotiate the often-complex mental health challenges faced in their workplace.

This includes a Graduate Diploma of Mental Health (Nursing), which the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses (ACMHN) recently awarded full accreditation for the next five years.

Mental health academic and director of post graduate studies at ECU’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, Dr Yvonne Middlewick joins Danae Gibson to talk about how we might mitigate the shortage.
