Stargazers treated to two rare lunar events this August

The moon is at its closest to Earth this month, 42,000 km closer than it was in summer, resulting in the appearance of a so-called “supermoon.” This annual phenomenon only occurs 2-4 times per year, but stargazers and astronomers will be treated to two in this month alone.

The first supermoon this month will be Wednesday, August 2 — sometimes called the sturgeon moon, and then we will get to see another full moon on Thursday, August 31 — a so-called “blue moon.”  “Once in a blue moon” usually describes a rare event, but how rare are they? Dr. Ellie Samson from Curtin University joins to discuss.
