The Chronic Feelings of Emptiness talk Cat Depression

The Chronic Feelings of Emptiness deal in contrasts. Stark, yet warm; bold but brittle.

Emerging as the solo songwriting project of Will Jones in 2022, TCFOE expanded out into a full band a year later, featuring Darcy St. Jack (bass), Riley Thompson (drums) and Matthew Tomich (guitar).  Equally indebted to the earnestness of country-folk and the clinical distance of slowcore, TCFOE draw on the likes of Duster, Songs: Ohia and White Fence to produce dense and fragile dynamics, writing the kinds of songs that fit comfortably on a personalised mixtape.

Joining Breakfast’s Pam Boland are members of The Chronic Feelings of Emptiness, Will Jones and Matthew Tomich, to discuss their latest single, Cat Depression and their single launch at The Bird.

“Everyone playing at The Bird is going to be playing the similar, emotional, intimate stuff. Lifecry are great, Symmetrical Dogs are great and Glimmer are great and I can’t say much more.”

Written in late 2023, their latest single, Cat Depression, unfolds like a rising tide, anchored by Will Jones’ fragile vocal delivery and deft lyricism, the song is a gradual unveiling, painting a brittle portrait of loss and longing before crashing like a rogue wave in its powerful crescendo.

Will talked about how the band was formed, “I think I wanted to play them live properly and I recorded them with so many instruments that I wanted it to be a band. Matthew and I had always wanted to start a slowcore project for many years and at that point, we’d given up on writing music together, so I asked him to help me flesh out this project of mine.”

Matthew also admitted that “Will and I met in the RTRFM studio, around 2018-2019,  whilst I was creating an episode of Behind The Mirror and Will was producing Up Late, I spent about 2 years actively courting your friendship, we talked about starting a band for years and it only gained momentum once Will did all the ‘heavy lifting’ to get it going.”
