The Red Tingles Natural Defence Against Fire

New research from Curtin University has explored the naturally occurring fire defensive properties found in Australian trees, specifically in the Red Tingle. The eucalyptus variety that is found primarily in southern WA is susceptible to frequent fires yet naturally demonstrates an impressive recovery following fires.

Understanding this make-up and the ways that trees can look after themselves could be a significant opportunity to improve fire resistance in the future.

Dr Philip Zylstra, adjunct associate professor at Curtin’s school of Molecular and Life Science chats with Fiona Bartholomaeus about this new discovery.
