The Right to Disconnect outside of work

Recently new legislation has been put forward to give employees new right to disconnect from work. With smart-phones allowing us to be contacted at any time, we are being asked to give up more of out time thinking about and participating in work.

Many workers are claiming that they are being coerced to work unpaid overtime. The Right to Disconnect is looking to give employees the ability to refuse to work outside of their schedule to let them rest and reduce overwork. The legislation aims to allow for flexible work arrangements and won’t interfere with optional overtime.

Associate Professor John Hopkins explained how The Right to Disconnect will be implemented, what the conditions of overtime and overwork are now, and reactions to the legislation.
