Timothy Nelson on his Debaser Tapes

A long time fixture of the Australian music scene, Timothy Nelson has been celebrated for his evocative songwriting, dynamic performances and dedication to the WA music community.

Debaser Tapes, his latest album, marks the next chapter in a career defined by heartfelt connection and musical exploration.

“This album has been such a journey, it’s a little hard to believe it’s finally being released”, Nelson reflects. “I started recording it somewhere back in 2019 with Andy Lawson at Debaser, his home studio—which, of course, the record is now named after.”

As Timothy’s narratives ebb and flow so do the musical styles he leans into; country rock music bleeds into yacht rock and velveteen folk pop. His ear for for undeniably catchy melodies and stories with just enough melodrama chain these minute stylistic changes together and make it a colourful portrait of his life. It’s a bit of a time capsule, filled by Nelson and sealed shut Lawson.

The Tropical Ginger singer joined our resident (if fraudulent) redhead on Breakfast to talk all things Debaser Tapes and deliver a live version of Greenmount Hill.

Timothy Nelson’s Debaser Tapes is out everywhere now.
