We Are Still Here: Clarence Ryan

Last year was the 250th anniversary of James Cook’s second voyage to Australia. To mark the occasion, a group of Indigenous and Maori filmmakers make a series of short films that reflected on that voyage’s legacy of colonialism, racism and imperialism.

The final product is called We are Still Here, which weaves together 8 short stories that span 1,000 years and multiple genres.

One of the short stars WA actor Clarence Ryan as Ken, a painter who finds himself harassed by a police officer while trying to purchase alcohol in Alice Springs. It’s funny, frustrating and surprising–and it carries added relevance given the current state of liquor laws in Alice Springs.

Movie Squad’s Simon Miraudo caught up with Clarence Ryan ahead of the film’s Q&A screening at Luna Cinemas tonight.
