when the poems do what they do with Aja Monet

Surrealist blues poet, storyteller, and organiser Aja Monet released earlier this month her debut album, when the poems do what they do, via drink sum wtr.

It’s a record steeped in Black American folklore, music and poetry that reflects on the scars of social injustice, the strength of love and Aja’s own multiplicity with passion and profound gravitas. The album’s arrangements range from soft-simmering jazz to ambient boogie to blues epics.

Monet will perform at the Fremantle Biennale on Saturday November 18, in what will be her Australian debut live performance. Tickets are available from here.

RTRFM presenter Tash Thomas jumped on a call with Aja to chat about how this project came together, as well as what we can expect from the forthcoming WA live performance. Tash started off by asking when Aja’s love for poetry took flight…
