The View From Here #38: Flewnt

The View From Here continues for a sixth season on RTRFM, with 12 monthly instalments featuring some of our favourite local artists in iconic and unexpected locations across WA.

The sixth of 12 episodes sees the the brilliant, thoughtful and inspiring rhythms and beats of Noongar MC Flewnt in the centre of the castle on the hill of the Fremantle Arts Centre.

Flewnt runs through four of his powerful, inspiring, exciting and exceptional hip hop tunes, accompanied by a horn section and back-up vocalist Tani Walker belting out the high notes.

It takes place in the surrounds of Fremantle Arts Centre in Waylyup, one of the city’s finest live music venues. The building dates back to 1864  and has a varied and interesting history, from asylum to World War 2 shelter to its current place as a centre of culture in Freo.

A leader in his community, Flewnt does not just rap about the simple things in life; he raps and teaches about the world he sees in front of him as a Noongar man and role model. Songs of belonging, protest, hope and freedom punctuate his set at Fremantle Arts Centre.

Witness raps and beats that speak to his community’s struggles for freedom from oppression and hope of a better future for his kids and the many young Indigenous kids with whom he works.
