The View From Here #42: Turiya
The View From Here continues for a sixth season on RTRFM, with 12 monthly instalments featuring some of our favourite local artists in iconic and unexpected locations across WA.
The tenth of 12 episodes sees the improvised majesty of jazz trio Turiya take over the grand and historic ninety-year-old Winthrop Hall on the grounds of the University of Western Australia.
Set in the heart of WA’s premiere university, Winthrop Hall is the heart of UWA. A place where graduations happen, exams are held and awards are awarded, the hall is majestic and awe inspiring. No better place for jazz trio Turiya to take up a spot to run through three of their amazing tunes.
Featuring Talya Valenti (drums), Kate Pass (double bass) and Michelle Smith (harp), Turiya blends perfectly between traditional jazz and improvised magic. Running through three tunes, they fill the space of Winthrop Hall will a wonderful blend of light and dark, fast and slow, heavy and quiet… the perfect jazz trio.
