Moorditj Mag: A Name Change for the City of Stirling

On Monday, 17 May, electors passed a motion to rename the City of Stirling due to its genocidal resonances.

James Stirling, the first Governor of Western Australia, played an instrumental role in the brutal Pinjarra Massacre of 1834.

The council is one of Perth’s biggest, and Monday’s successful motion means a name change must be discussed by the general council on June 8.

The motion was brought forward by CoS ratepayer (and On the Record presenter) Jeff Bullen, who joined Moorditj Mag to discuss the ugly history behind some household Perth names.
