Angela Ryder (Episode #1)
Angela Ryder and her siblings were taken from their parents when she was nine years old.
Separated from her brothers and sisters, Angela was placed in Wandering Mission, 120km south-east of Perth, where her own mother had been held as a child.
Wandering Mission was established by the Catholic Archbishop of Perth in 1944 as a day school for Aboriginal girls. Children aged 4 to 15 could board there if demanded by government authorities. Boys were later admitted from 1951, until the mission’s closure in 1979.
During this conversation with Wayne Bynder, Angela talks about her time at Wandering, the broken bonds in her family when she was returned, and how she came to build a life in the aftermath.
