Say hello to

Daniel Grant

( He/ Him )

I love local music and I’m psyched to have the chance to share it with anyone and everyone.

About

Get to know Daniel

I think we all mean it when we say it really is the amazing people you get to meet and collaborate with: the artists who come in as guests, the staff, the volunteers, the presenters and everyone who keeps the place running. It’s a very welcoming, inclusive community to be a part of.

Outside of RTR I work as a photographer and illustrator, mostly in portraits, theatre, music. But my favourite is band portraits. Like most teens I grew up with a wall covered in band posters, and now I get to live a little dream of mine and be on the other side, making the pictures. I also make music and raise a mini boi with my partner Bridget.

Have been listening since high school, thanks to my dad having it on in the car all the time. I used to tape (!!) Spiral Scratch, the independent music show on Monday nights, and listen back at school, one of the ways I discovered lots of my fave artists. RTR and Live at the Cornflakes were my first introduction to local music, which had a huge effect on me, realising that amazing bands and music happened not just out in the big wide world, but right on my doorstep.

How did you become involved?

RTR has always been so supportive and generous to the bands I’ve been in over the years, I began volunteer photographing for them as a sort of donation to give back. Eventually they offered me the Presenter Course as payment in kind. I figured I’d do it just for fun, but of course like everyone else, I got bitten by the radio bug and I’m still here 🙂

Tell us about your most memorable gig, either attending or playing at?

Probably the Flaming Lips, at Southbound 2013. I was lucky to have the job of photographing their show from right onstage, and being right in the middle of all that chaos and motion, the music all around, the costumed punters invited to dance up there, the pyrotechnics and the huge outpouring of love from band and crowd, it was absolutely wild. Wayne Coyne hugged me and I got quite emotional 🙂

What is your favourite show (other than your own) on RTRFM?

There are too many. I love Artbeat, Siamese Dream, Ambient Zone, Australian Melodrama! I think Drivetime is maybe my favourite, just because that perfect mix of new and old choices let the presenters’ personalities really shine through!

Love music?

Love RTRFM.
