About

Get to know Hayley

I first heard RTRFM when I was about seventeen and had just started playing in local punk bands. I love that every time I tune in to RTR I learn something new! I once played guitar in a 60’s girl garage group called The Blast Off Girls; I played guitar in Sex Panther briefly and I’ve been playing solo with various supporting lineups since 2007. I currently do vocals in a new punk band called DETH, which is sort of like a mix between Big Black and ESG.

I enjoy belting out the lyrics; it’s really therapeutic. I have a Psychology Honours degree and am currently pursuing my Masters as of 2024. I work as a mental health peer support worker and that’s a big passion of mine. I’m also big on accessibility and amplifying marginalised voices.

How did you become involved in the station?

I started out as an interviewee and played live on air countless times. My first interview was with Peter Barr in 2004. I jumped on the phones for Radiothon a few years in a row and volunteered in the office for a while, doing basic admin stuff.

I eventually did the presenter’s course in 2016 but the overnight grind wasn’t compatible with my sleepy disposition so that didn’t stick. Then I was asked to co-host Homegrown and I’ve been presenting that show plus Drastic since early 2023.

Tell us about your most memorable gig, either attending or playing at?

In 2016 my electronic duo HEEBIEJEEBIES played with a full band at In The Pines. We had a double bass, violin, trombone, synths, guitar and two drummers. Epic!

What is your favourite show (other than your own) on RTRFM?
