Radio training

RTRFM offers a number of different training options, including a full six-week Radio Training Course to get you ready to broadcast on RTRFM, and Breaking Sound Barriers, a podcasting course for people in the community who identify as having a disability.

the radio training course

RTRFM runs an introductory radio training course for those who want to become a volunteer presenter on the station. If you want to learn how to become a radio presenter, this is your starting point.

The course is designed for entry level learners with no previous radio experience and learners with some level of experience in broadcasting. Taught by an assortment of RTRFM staff and trusted presenters, we offer a two-hour a week, six-week course in basic broadcast training.

Weekly Breakdown

Week one

Community Radio and RTRFM – an overview of the history and structure of RTRFM and a general overview of the Community Radio Sector in Australia.

Week Two

Programming and Music – you will learn what music fits the RTRFM sound and how to source. Learn about RTRFM’s Music Policy and how best to put a show together.

Week Three

Presenting and Scripting – a rundown on how to script a show as well as how to create a radio persona; to understand your audience and what they want from you as a presenter.

Week Four

Interviewing – a basic introduction to interviewing techniques and running a successful interview.

Week Five

How Radio Works and Editing – learn about how the radio works, basic editing techniques and get answers to some curly technical queries.

Week Six

Where to? – we’ll tell you where to from here, including: becoming an RTRFM member, becoming a presenter, rules and regulations of the station and expectations of volunteer presenters.

It is policy that all graduates from the training course do at least three (3) overnight programs, Up Late or Snooze Button, before hosting a show elsewhere on the grid. After this point, you may apply to join collectives or guest host during peak programs (depending on space and availability).

Costs and Deets

The course costs are:
$400 full-price
$350 for students/concession holders

The course runs on weeknights, 6 – 8pm at the RTRFM office in Mt Lawley. Each session runs on the same night across six weeks. Some extra time is required for practice and project completion.

Breaking Sound Barriers 2025

RTRFM is seeking expressions of interest for a 2025 edition of Breaking Sound Barriers – a project that will train participants in how to present and produce radio and podcast content. This project is specifically aimed at people in the community who identify as having a disability.

This course was previously delivered in 2023. We are now seeking 7 new students from diverse backgrounds who would benefit from training.

Participation in ‘Breaking Sound Barriers’ will require around 2 hours a fortnight for 12 weeks, between April – June 2025

This training program is free for participants, thanks to support from Youth Disability Advocacy Network and Synergy.
