Should we burn ammonia for clean energy?

In an effort to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, Japan is aiming to utilise ammonia alongside coal in its already existing coal-fire power plants. Ammonia is produced by combining hydrogen and nitrogen, and when burned doesn’t produce any CO2 emissions. Australia is in a position to become a central provider of Ammonia for Japan and the rest of the world but ensuring that this resource is produced without carbon emissions itself, is another concern.

Associate Professor Llewelyn Hughes, from the Crawford School of Public Policy at Australian National University chats with Tom Reynolds.
