Calls for changes to sexual assault reporting to be made nationwide
PIC: Leia Duffy
Did you know survivors of sexual assault are currently faced with just two options? The first being to report crimes and pursue legal action, including potential court proceedings, or the second being to remain unheard or unaccounted by authorities.
Changes in New South Wales has seen the introduction of Operation VEST, a new method of online reporting for sexual assault victims, where they’re able to safely, and anonymously if they choose so, report without further legal proceedings. Alleged perpetrators names will then be added to the Sexual Assault Reporting Option database.
Petition EN2816, or Introduce Operation VEST Australia-Wide, is currently available for public support, initiated by local artist Leia Duffy.
Leia joined Breakfast with Taylah to breakdown the petition and explain why the new reporting option is absolutely necessary for victims and survivors.
You can sign Petition EN2816 here.
